Future-Proofing for Our Planet with Diana Tovar

If we want to build a company that’s around for generations, we have to build resilience and future-proof our business. Our Sustainability team ensures that HubSpot’s product and offices are operating efficiently with the planet in mind, all while encouraging and supporting HubSpotters in doing their part.

In this Q&A, Diana Tovar, Senior Program Manager of Sustainability at HubSpot, sheds some light on what this looks like.

Q&A

Q: We have global offices covering over 600,000 square feet in 14 countries. As a Senior Program Manager on the Sustainability team, what initiatives are you focused on?

As our customers, employees, and communities face the growing impacts of a warming planet, we’re committed to doing our part to build a positive future. At HubSpot, we’re driving efficiencies by cutting emissions in our operations, collaborating with suppliers and partners, and managing risks so we can build a more resilient, future-ready business. Here are a few ways we’re taking action:

  • 100% Renewable Energy: All our offices are powered by renewable electricity. We’re also shifting to higher-impact energy sources, like green tariffs and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), wherever possible. Today, over 85% of our active office space operates on green tariffs.
  • Building Efficiency: We’ve made major upgrades in our two largest offices—HubSpot House in Dublin and 2 Canal Street in Cambridge, MA—to reduce energy use. That includes things like LED lighting, smarter HVAC controls, solar gain reduction with window film, and off-hours equipment scheduling. These updates cut our annual energy use by over 300,000 kWh—reducing emissions and saving money. Win-win.

Q: How is HubSpot’s product evolving with our planet in mind?

We’re evolving our platform with planetary impact in mind by continually enhancing the efficiency of our software infrastructure. These optimizations, from energy-efficient data processing to improved resource management, reduce both our operational costs and our environmental footprint. This commitment ensures HubSpot scales responsibly, minimizing resource consumption even as we grow.

In optimizing our platform’s infrastructure, we are implementing significant system improvements like enhanced data storage and task management, alongside using energy-efficient processors via our data center partners. We also maximize resource efficiency through high utilization commitments, auto-scaling, and leveraging efficient open-source software. These combined efforts measurably reduce energy consumption and lower our carbon footprint, enabling responsible global scaling with fewer resources than previously projected.

We are also addressing downstream emissions by developing tools like the Customer Carbon Calculator, empowering customers with HubSpot-specific data for their own Scope 3 reporting. Similarly, as we integrate AI across our platform, we focus on both its potential to enhance sustainability and the need for responsible, efficient development to minimize its own environmental footprint.

Q: Are there any major sustainability milestones that HubSpot has reached recently?

Yes—and we’re proud of how far we’ve come. Through our work improving building performance, investing in high-quality renewable energy, and setting stricter standards for new offices, we’ve significantly reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

In fact, we’ve already hit our medium-term science-based target to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 47% by 2030 (from a 2019 baseline)—five years ahead of schedule. That’s a huge win and proof that early, bold action pays off.

Q: In the last year, what is something you’ve accomplished that you are most proud of? What work went into accomplishing this?

In 2024, we transitioned our largest office in Cambridge, MA, to 100% renewable electricity by enrolling in the City’s aggregation programme. The electricity now comes from local MA Class I Renewable Energy Certificates, which support the development of new solar projects right in our backyard.

What makes this special? HubSpot became the largest business in the programme’s 100% renewable tier. It was a true team effort—from our facilities crew to the landlord to the sustainability team. It’s a great example of how collaboration can drive change, and hopefully it inspires other companies to step up too.

Q: What’s one way HubSpotters are supporting the work you are doing?

So many teams are helping move the needle. The Facilities team is one of our closest partners—they’ve helped us raise the bar when it comes to finding and setting up office spaces that match our climate goals.

For example, our London office is fully electric, powered by 100% renewable energy, and rated BREEAM Excellent. Our brand new India office is already powered by 80% renewable energy, with ISO 14001 and LEED Platinum certifications. But beyond buildings, we’re embedding sustainability into all corners of HubSpot:

  • More Sustainable Events: We’ve been partnering closely with the INBOUND team to reduce the carbon footprint of our biggest annual event. For the past two years, we’ve measured INBOUND’s emissions and worked with suppliers and partners to find ways to reduce impact.
  • Sustainable Procurement: Our procurement team is helping embed sustainability into how we work with vendors. We’ve updated our Supplier Code of Conduct to include clear climate expectations, introduced environmental criteria into the onboarding process, and now encourage all new supplier contracts over $500K to have science-based targets (SBTs).
  • Making Sustainability Everyone’s Business: We want sustainability to feel accessible—not overwhelming. So we’re creating resources such as our Employee Carbon Calculator that build climate literacy, from beginner-friendly emissions guides to toolkits for reducing impact at home and at work. Our internal community, #sustainability-at-hubspot, connects HubSpotters around the world, sharing tips and building momentum year-round. Whether employees are just getting started or already deep in the climate space, there’s always room to get involved
