Think and Talk Yourself into Success Like a Navy SEAL
Anne Bachrach (USA)
Okay, let’s be honest – we all want that little extra edge in life, right? That unwavering determination that helps you get things done, no matter what.
Well, guess what? Navy SEALs have that grit in spades, and the good news is that you can actually learn a thing or two from them. It’s about how you think and talk to yourself!
Mental Toughness: It’s Not Just for Battlefields
We tend to think of Navy SEALs as superhuman warriors, and they can be pretty darn tough out in the field, that’s for sure. What really sets them apart is their mental resilience.
It’s about pushing through discomfort, fear, and doubt to keep going even when you want to quit. That kind of toughness is a game-changer in any area of life.
Let’s explore 5 steps to help you think and talk to yourself like a Navy Seal.
Step 1: Flip the Script on Self-Talk
Okay, here’s the thing: how we talk to ourselves profoundly influences how we feel and perform. Notice how you think when things get tough. Do phrases like “I can’t” or “I’ve never been good at….” or “It’s too hard” constantly run through your head? If so, it’s time for an upgrade!
Navy SEALs use positive self-talk like a weapon. They replace those negative thoughts with words like “Keep going,” “Get it done,” or “One step at a time.” Sounds simple, right? Trust me, this shift in your inner voice can be surprisingly powerful.
David Goggins, a retired SEAL and ultra-endurance athlete, puts it bluntly: “If you tell yourself you can’t do something, guess what? You’re absolutely right.”
Step 2: Embrace the Suck
Let’s be real; life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, it just flat-out sucks. Navy SEALs have a saying: “Embrace the suck.” It means ditching the whining and accepting that challenges and discomfort are part of the process.
Think about it: When you’re facing a tough task, do you find excuses to put it off? Instead of complaining, apply a SEAL-inspired approach.
Tell yourself, “This is gonna be hard, and that’s okay. I’ve got this.” You’ll be surprised at how focusing on the difficulty actually makes it feel more manageable.
Step 3: Break It Down Like a Mission
SEALs are masters at breaking down huge, complex missions into smaller, more achievable steps. This helps prevent getting overwhelmed. Here’s how you can apply that same mindset to your business goals.
Let’s say you want to double your company’s revenue in the next year. That’s a bold ambition, and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Instead of fixating on the end goal, break it down into manageable phases.
Your first step might be conducting a thorough analysis of your current sales and marketing strategies. Then, identify potential areas for improvement, such as expanding into new markets or developing new product lines. Each of these areas can be further broken down into specific tasks, like conducting market research, creating marketing campaigns, or refining your product offerings.
By focusing on one step at a time, you’ll create a clear roadmap to even greater success. This approach not only makes the overall goal feel less daunting, it also allows you to celebrate smaller wins along the way, building momentum and reinforcing your commitment to achieving that ambitious target.
