Evolutionary biology is one of the most far-reaching fields in science, drawing on genetics, paleobiology, genomics, and chemistry to explain how all life on Earth is connected. In this guide, we’ve used the Class Central database of over 250,000 courses to compile more than 140 free online courses on evolutionary biology and its sub-disciplines. All courses are free or free-to-audit, meaning you’ll have access to all the learning content.
To make the list easy to navigate, we’ve broken it down by subject. Click on a subject to jump to the corresponding courses:
Evolution: An Ongoing Process
A study published in April 2026 by Harvard University researchers shows that human evolution is continuing.

Combining ancient genomic data with novel computational methods, the analysis shows that directional selection has driven the spread or decline of hundreds of gene variants in West Eurasia since the end of the Ice Age. Directional selection is a type of natural selection that occurs when a successful version of a gene gets passed on to more offspring than less advantageous versions. That gene rapidly rises in frequency across the population.
The analysis also shows that selection has actually accelerated since humans transitioned from hunting and gathering to farming.
Evolutionary biology is increasingly being used in other fields, from public health to psychology and anthropology, to generate rich hypotheses.
If you’re interested in learning more, here’s a selection of great courses from MIT, Yale, University of Alberta, and many more. So satisfy your curiosity and jump into evolutionary biology!
