Best Project-Based Course for Beginners (Cineversity)

If you’re just getting started with Cinema 4D and don’t want to commit to a paid course just yet, this is the course for you.

Getting Started With Cinema 4D is a beginners course that is part of the “Cineversity Getting Started Series” by Maxon, the official creators of Cinema 4D. This course is an ideal first course for getting into 3D modeling and animation with the software for free.

Led by E.J. Hassenfratz, the creative director at School of Motion, this course walks you through Cinema 4D basics while working on your first project. You’ll be guided through the software’s fundamentals and work on a character animation project from start to finish. What’s more, you’ll get hands-on experience with project files created with Cinema 4D 25.

Bear in mind the series was recorded on an older release, so a few panels have moved since. The fundamentals it teaches have not.

In this course, you’ll learn:

  • The Cinema 4D interface, menus, and keyboard shortcuts
  • Advanced topics including MoGraph, UVs and BodyPaint
  • 3D lighting workflows
  • Different animation techniques, scene management, and render settings.

Best Live Cinema 4D Class for After Effects Users (Noble Desktop)

Noble Desktop info page

If you prefer instructor-led learning, Noble Desktop’s Cinema 4D in After Effects Bootcamp offers real-time feedback and accountability that pre-recorded courses can’t match. It runs 18 hours, in person at Noble’s NYC campus or live online over Zoom, and costs $975.

This is the pick for motion designers who already work in After Effects and want to add 3D to what they do. The whole course is built around that pipeline: you model, texture, and light in Cinema 4D, then bring the result back into After Effects through the Cineware effect.

One thing to be clear about: the class teaches Cinema 4D Lite, the trimmed-down version bundled with After Effects, so you don’t need a separate Maxon subscription. That also means it doesn’t reach the full application’s Mograph, simulation, or Redshift toolsets. If those are what you came for, our modeling and Mograph picks cover them in the full version.

Key Benefits

  • Small class sizes (8-15 students)
  • Attend in person at 185 Madison Ave, NYC, or live online
  • Verified digital certificate of completion
  • Free retake within one year.

Noble Desktop knows what they’re doing – they’ve been around for over three decades providing instruction with industry experts. Don’t take my word for it – student reviews on Yelp and Google praise their practical approach and instructor quality.

What You’ll Learn

  • How After Effects and Cinema 4D Lite fit together, and how to export 3D scenes between them
  • Building 3D models from scratch, and importing existing ones
  • Working with splines and the Lathe, Loft, and Sweep generators
  • The Extrude generator, and editing and applying textures
  • Texturing models and working with cameras and lights
  • Modeling, texturing, and lighting complete 3D scenes
  • The Cineware effect in After Effects
  • 3D camera tracking and data export workflows.

Prerequisite

  • Knowledge of After Effects equivalent to Noble’s After Effects Bootcamp.

Best Course to Master Mograph (Udemy)

Following up with the last course is Cinema 4D Complete: Vol. 3 Unleash the power of Mograph!. Lionel VICIDOMINI continues his educational series, this time focusing on the power and utility of Mograph. This tool allows users to generate intricate, captivating animations with ease due to its flexible modular design.

The course is structured as a video guide, offering learners the freedom to navigate through the content based on their needs and level of expertise. You will:

  • Master core Mograph concepts and techniques
  • Explore the extensive library of Mograph effectors
  • Learn to combine fields with effectors for enhanced control
  • Gain experience with Mograph Generators like Voronoi Fracture
  • Discover techniques for blending Volumes and Fields
  • Create organic growth systems using Vertex Map fields
  • Apply learned concepts through practical exercises.

The final chapter is close to four hours of workshops, where you build a procedural clock with no keyframes, a parametric barrel generator, tumbling dominos, and a wall of cubes that transitions between two textures.

Fields arrived in R20, so this one needs R20 or newer.

“I really enjoyed listening to Lionel’s lectures. He teaches clearly and the important thing is he teaches the logic of animations that he makes you understand easily. He answers your questions quickly and he cares about his students.“ – Alper B., Udemy learner.

Best Course for the New Simulation Tools (Udemy)

Cinema 4D rebuilt its simulation system in the 2024 releases, unifying rigid bodies, soft bodies, cloth, and ropes under one engine. None of the courses above cover it, which is why Cinema 4D Complete: Vol. 4 All about Simulations earns a place here.

This is the fourth volume of Lionel VICIDOMINI’s series, and it picks up where the Mograph volume leaves off. Several chapters build directly on ideas from that course, so the two work well back to back.

The projects are the draw. You topple dominos, demolish a wall, tear fabric, turn lettering into balloons, and model a dress on a dancing cartoon character so the fabric follows the movement. The garment chapter runs the full workflow, from modeling and finishing the dress through testing and caching it for smooth playback.

In this course, you will:

  • Set up rigid bodies so objects collide and react on their own
  • Combine dynamics with keyframe animation and Mograph in the same scene
  • Work with cloth, including tearing it
  • Use soft bodies for anything rubbery, plastic, or easily deformed
  • Model and simulate garments on an animated character
  • Animate ropes.

One caveat worth checking before you buy: the course targets Cinema 4D 2024.2 and later, because that is where the unified simulation system landed. On older releases the tools it teaches won’t be there. All source files are included.

How We Made Our Picks and Tested Them

Trying to find “the best” can be daunting, even for those of us who live and breathe online courses. Here’s how I approached this task.

First, I combed through Class Central’s Catalog, reddit communities such as r/cinema4D, and the internet to find a variety of free and paid open courses, some with certificates.

I extracted information from course syllabi and reviews, and compiled their ratings, leveraging the Class Central database with its thousands of course ratings and reviews written by our users as well as available course provider ratings. I watched some course videos to sample courses I hadn’t already taken.

Then, I defined the scope for these recommendations. A Cinema 4D course can cover various topics. I chose top courses from a range of sub-fields: Fundamentals, Modeling, MoGraph, Simulations, 3D to 2D animation, Redshift for C4D, and motion tracking.

I also checked each pick against the release it was recorded on. Cinema 4D has changed enough since some of these courses were made that the version matters, so where a course needs a particular release, I say so in its section.

Ultimately, I used a combination of data and my own judgment to make these picks. I’m confident these recommendations will serve as an excellent learning path to master Cinema 4D.
