A few years ago, I got tired of not being able to tell the difference between a real argument about climate change and a confident-sounding myth, so I went looking for courses taught by people who actually study it.

What I found changed how I read the news. The science is not especially hard to follow, and once you have it, the noise sorts itself out quickly.

The public conversation has shifted too. Most of it is now about how fast we can cut emissions and how we live with the warming already locked in, though myths about the basic science still circulate widely, and one course in this guide exists specifically to take them apart.

How We Chose These Courses

Climate change is a wide subject, so I picked one strong course per sub-field rather than eight variations on the same introduction. I looked for:

  • Teaching by working climate scientists, physicians, or policy researchers, not general explainers
  • Clear treatment of the underlying physics (energy balance, greenhouse gases, feedback loops) rather than conclusions alone
  • Sources and citations you can check yourself
  • Coverage of a distinct angle: science, health, mitigation, adaptation, denial, or psychology
  • Content that has been updated since the most recent IPCC assessment cycle
  • Free access, with the certificate cost stated plainly

The ranking draws on learner reviews on Class Central, ratings on the host platforms, and the courses I have taken myself. Best Place to Start (Columbia University)

Frontiers of Science: Climate & Us is the guide’s best first course because it builds the science from one equation: energy in equals energy out, rather than from conclusions. It is the highest-rated pick here, at 4.9 out of 5 from 23 Class Central reviews.

You start with what sets Earth’s temperature: solar output, the eccentricity, obliquity and precession of Earth’s orbit, surface reflectivity, and atmospheric composition. From there you work through the instrumental temperature record, rising greenhouse gas concentrations, and the carbon isotope evidence that identifies fossil fuels as the source of the extra carbon dioxide.

The paleoclimate section is the part most guides skip. Tree rings and ice cores are how scientists know what the climate did before thermometers existed, and understanding the proxies is what makes the long record credible rather than assertion. The course closes on feedback loops, climate models, and a module that debunks specific myths which is useful groundwork before potholer54’s series.

Best One-Sitting Overview (Udemy)

Climate Change & Sustainability Essentials is the fastest way onto the same ground the longer courses cover. It runs 1 hour 11 minutes across 11 lectures and is free.

Its strength is the roster. Rather than one presenter summarizing the field, you hear short talks from researchers who work in it: Friederike Otto and Gbemi Oluleye of Imperial College London, Timothy Lenton and Martin Siegert of the University of Exeter, Yadvinder Malhi of Oxford, Matthew Agarwala of Cambridge, and Tamsin Edwards of King’s College London.

The five sections move from the current state of the crisis, to how we got here, to what to do about it at personal, national, and global levels. Dr Yishay Mor introduces each lecture and pulls out the takeaways, which keeps a set of separate expert talks feeling like one course.

There is no assessment and no certificate, and at just over an hour it is an orientation rather than an education. Follow it with Frontiers of Science: Climate & Us if you want the underlying physics.

Best for Debunking Climate Myths (potholer54)

Climate change explained, and the myths debunked is the pick for anyone who keeps running into confident claims they can’t immediately evaluate. It is the only course here built around checking specific arguments rather than teaching a syllabus.

Peter Hadfield is a former science journalist with a geology degree, and he is explicit that he is not a climatologist. What he does is trace a claim back to the paper it supposedly rests on and show what that paper actually said. The method is the lesson: most of the myths turn out to be real research that was truncated, reversed, or quoted past its own caveats.

Every video cites its sources on screen so you can check the primary papers yourself. The playlist now runs to 77 videos, roughly 19 hours, and has grown steadily since the first upload in 2008. Best for Turning Knowledge into Action (University of Leeds)

Climate Action: Tackling the Climate Crisis for a Better World is the newest pick in this guide and the best answer to “so what can I actually do?” It launched in 2025, holds 4.9 out of 5 from 28 Class Central reviews, and includes a free certificate.

Week one covers the crisis and the case that change is possible. Week two is the substantive part: what has to change in transport, food and farming, buildings and households, energy, and business, sector by sector, with the trade-offs stated. Week three deals with communication and advocacy, including how to handle discourses designed to delay action rather than deny the science.

The framing is deliberately about justice as well as emissions, with attention to who bears the costs of both the crisis and the transition, particularly in the Global South. The five educators come from sociology, climate politics, employment research, and climate communication, which is why the course reads as social science rather than atmospheric physics.

Best on the Health Effects (Harvard University)

The Health Effects of Climate Change is the most popular course in this guide by a wide margin, with over 208K enrollments on edX, and the one that makes the problem concrete. It opens with a climate science mini-course, so you can take it without the greenhouse effect being familiar.

The direct effects come first: heat-related illness, heat exposure and how to prevent it, and air quality. Then the indirect ones: water-borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery, and vector-borne diseases including malaria and dengue, whose ranges shift as temperature and rainfall change.

The nutrition module is the one that surprises most learners. It covers not just whether we grow more or fewer crops in a hotter world, but whether those crops are as nutritious, what happens to the pests that eat them, and how marine fisheries fare in a warmer, more acidic ocean. A migration module follows, on what happens when temperatures exceed human tolerance and when storms, droughts, and sea-level rise displace people.

Climate Action: Solutions for a Changing Planet is the guide’s most technical pick, built by the SDG Academy after the 2015 Paris Agreement to teach how the agreement actually gets implemented. It is graduate-level in tone and the only intermediate course here that goes deep on numbers.

The first module works through the carbon budget and what reaching net zero by mid-century requires, including the uncertainties and how to treat them as an insurance problem rather than a reason to wait. Module two covers the three pillars of deep decarbonization with national case studies for the US, Canada, Russia, and Australia.

From there it moves through low-emissions electricity (solar, wind, nuclear, storage, grid integration, and life cycle analysis) then agriculture and land use, including Brazil’s supply-chain approach to deforestation. Making Climate Adaptation Happen: Governing Transformation Strategies for Climate Change covers the half of the problem most courses treat as a footnote. Some warming is already locked in, and adaptation is the work of living with it.

After a short grounding in climate science, you move to the societal effects and the adaptation responses already in use, then to the barriers that stop good adaptation plans from being implemented, which are usually institutional rather than technical.

Week three is on climate finance: where adaptation funding comes from, how it is allocated, how far it has come, and how far short of need it remains. Week four covers nature-based solutions and locally led action, including where the private sector fits. Throughout, the course compares the costs and benefits of adaptation against mitigation rather than treating them as alternatives.

It is built for current and future environmental policy professionals, and it is developed with the Global Center on Adaptation. Around 9.3K people have joined. Adaptive governance is the core skill on offer: reacting to fast-moving environmental crises is something most governing bodies are still poorly set up to do.

Best on the Psychology of the Crisis (The Open University)

Introducing Climate Psychology: facing the climate crisis starts from a finding the rest of this guide implies but never states: facts alone do not change behaviour. It is free, includes a free certificate, and takes about 12 hours.

The course introduces climate psychology, an emerging field that draws on social theory, psychoanalysis, ecopsychology, eco-feminism, and post-humanism rather than standard behaviour-change models. Week two is on how people actually engage with the crisis: indifference, distress, and what lies between them.

Week three covers denialism and the other obstacles, including the role of fossil fuel producers in shaping public discourse, and doomism, which is increasingly the more common failure mode. Week four is about living with the crisis: building psychological resilience, and the burnout risk that comes with sustained climate activism.

It is endorsed by the Climate Psychology Alliance. If potholer54’s series explains why the myths are wrong, this one explains why people believe them anyway. The two make a good pair.

Two of the eight include a free certificate: the University of Leeds course on FutureLearn and The Open University’s climate psychology course on OpenLearn. Columbia, SDG Academy, Harvard, and Groningen offer paid certificates. The Udemy overview and potholer54’s series have none.

Can I learn about climate change for free?

Columbia, Harvard, SDG Academy, and Groningen are self-paced archives that have been updated at intervals; the underlying physics does not change, but specific emissions figures and policy details in the older courses will lag behind the latest IPCC cycle.
